Margaret Carey, Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), is a soloist and lecturer with an extensive repertoire.
Soloist Career
Recently, Margaret has published her CD “Rose Petals” with the Canadian Music Centre Centre Discs Label (2020), performed for the Amici Strings program in Calgary (2020), performed a world premiere of Laurie Duncan’s “Viola Sonata” (2016), for the 40th anniversary concert of the Johann Strauss Foundation AB, as an invited performer at the International Viola Congress, the American Viola Society Festival, and the CIM Vernon Castleman Viola Seminar (2016). She has also performed with the Manitoba Chamber orchestra in 2017-18 and 2019-20, and was on the faculty of the Westmont chamber musician festival in Montreal(2018), performed with the Winnipeg Chamber Players, at the Rio Cello Festival (2015), Doctoral recitals at the Université de Montréal Salle Claude Champagne and Salle Serge Garant (2011-14) the Centre Orford with concerts in Racine, Québec and The Orford Arts Centre (2013), the CICA International music festival where she performed as the soloist with orchestra (2012), the Affinis Music Festival, Japan, as well as various other recitals in Canada and festivals in Martina Franca, Italy; Litomysyl, Czech Republic and Båstad, Sweden.
The Winner of the Alexander and Buono International String Competition with a Carnegie Hall recital 2010 with Viola, the Yale School of Music Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition winner 2008 with a performance with Yale Philharmonia and Peter Oundjian conducting the Bartok Viola Concerto, in 2009, the Yale School of Music 2007 Lucy Grosvenor prize for “the musician the most likely to be successful as a soloist or chamber musician” for her class, the CMC (Canadian Music Competition) grand prize at the International Viola Congress in 2006, the CBC Debut Series Vancouver prize among others, she is not new to competition or to solo performances. She is trying to bring acclaim to the Viola as a solo instrument, and her Doctoral research was completed and focussed on Contemporary Canadian Viola Repertoire. She has continued to study solo voice repertoire extensively, and can perform professional solo recitals as a soprano singer and a violist upon demand.
